Coffee stains carpet because of the tannins and, depending on what you take in your cup, milk fats and sugar. The good news: fresh coffee comes out easily. The bad news: dried coffee stains often need professional extraction.
Fresh spill, first 5 minutes
Blot, do not rub. Use a clean white towel and press straight down. Keep moving to a clean section of towel until no more brown transfers.
Mix one teaspoon clear dish soap and one tablespoon white vinegar into two cups of cool water. Apply with a sponge, blot, then rinse with a second damp cloth. Cool water only, hot water sets tannin stains.
Set-in stain, hours or days later
The same dish soap and vinegar mix still helps but expect to repeat the process several times. Apply, let it sit five minutes, blot, rinse, repeat. Patience matters more than chemistry at this point.
If the carpet is light colored, a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution can lift remaining staining. Test in a hidden area first; peroxide can lighten some dyes.
When to stop and call a pro
If you see a ring forming, if the stain wicks back after drying, or if the spill included cream and sugar that have started to attract dirt, stop. Repeated home treatment at that point usually spreads the damage. Professional extraction with hot water and proper recovery pulls what surface blotting cannot reach.
Bottom line
Speed and cool water are the keys. If you missed the window or the stain is wicking back, call us for a free quote before scrubbing it deeper.
