Dust Mites in NJ Homes: What to Know and How to Reduce Them

Dust mites feed on shed skin and thrive above roughly 50 percent relative humidity, which describes most of a New Jersey summer. Mattresses, carpet, and upholstered furniture are where they concentrate.

Control the humidity first

Keeping indoor humidity between 40 and 50 percent does more than any cleaning product. A dehumidifier in the basement and consistent AC use during July and August makes a measurable difference.

Where they live

Mattresses and pillows hold the highest concentrations, followed by carpet in bedrooms and upholstered furniture. Hard floors and washable bedding are much less hospitable.

Reduction routine

Combine weekly hot-water bedding washes, HEPA vacuuming, allergen-barrier encasements, and periodic professional extraction of mattresses and bedroom carpet.

  • Wash bedding weekly at 130F or higher
  • Zippered allergen encasements on mattress and pillows
  • HEPA vacuum bedroom carpet twice weekly
  • Professional mattress and carpet cleaning every 4 to 6 months

Bottom line

If allergies spike indoors during NJ summers, the bedroom is the place to start. Call us for a mattress and bedroom carpet quote.
