Why a pet stain is different from a spill
Urine goes down. A cup of coffee mostly stays where it lands, in the face of the pile, while urine is thin and warm and runs through the backing into whatever is underneath. The mark on top can be the size of a coin over a patch in the pad the size of a dinner plate.
As it dries it leaves salts behind. Those salts take up moisture from the air, which is why a room can smell fine in January and sour on a humid day in July. Scented sprays cover that for a while and leave the salts where they are.
Finding the spots
Dry urine is often invisible on a patterned carpet or a dark sofa. Tell us where the animal tends to go, where you have noticed the smell, and how long it has been happening. The corners of a room, the area behind a chair and the end of a hallway are common places. A visit starts with a look at the material and the spots that matter, so the more you can point out, the less is left to guesswork.
Carpet and area rugs
In wall to wall carpet, the question is how far down the urine traveled. When it stayed in the pile, the spot is treated ahead of the main cleaning and then rinsed out with hot water extraction. When it went through to the pad or the subfloor, extraction improves the surface and the smell can still come back, because the source sits below anything cleaning can reach from above. Replacing a section of pad is a job for a carpet installer, and we tell you when we think that is where things stand.
An area rug has no pad built in, yet its foundation can hold urine the same way. Wool takes it up quickly, and urine can shift a rug's dyes for good. A rug with a recent accident can often be treated on the floor at home. One that has been used as a regular spot can be collected from the home and returned rolled and wrapped once it is clean.

Sofas, chairs and mattresses
On furniture the depth question is about the cushion. Fabric can be cleaned on every side, and a recent accident that stayed in the cover usually comes out with treatment and extraction. Foam is another matter. Once urine has soaked into the core of a seat cushion, cleaning the cover makes it look and smell better without emptying the foam.
A mattress is cleaned with very little water to keep its inside dry, which also limits how far down a treatment can go. A fresh accident near the surface responds well. An old one may fade and still leave a faint ring.
What may not come out
The result depends on the age of the accident, how often the same place was used, and how deep it went. Old urine that reached the pad under a carpet, the core of a cushion or the floor itself may not come out completely. A yellow mark can also be a change in the dye, and cleaning does not reverse that.
You hear this before we start. After looking at the spots we say what we expect to remove, what we expect to improve and what is likely to stay, and the decision to go ahead is yours.
Until we get there
- Blot a fresh accident with white towels, pressing down without rubbing.
- Add a little cool water and blot again until the towel comes up clean.
- Skip ammonia cleaners, which smell enough like urine to draw a pet back to the same place.
- Keep bleach away from the spot, since it takes color out of carpet and fabric for good.
- Keep the pet out of the room until the spot is dry.
- Note where each accident happened so you can show us.
How a pet stain visit goes
We find the spots
You show us where the accidents were, and we check the material and how far each one went.
We say what to expect
Before any work begins you hear which spots should come out and which may only improve.
We treat, then clean
Each spot is treated ahead of the main cleaning, with the method that suits the carpet, rug, fabric or mattress.
We leave it drying
Air moving across the material shortens the drying time. Keep pets off it until it is dry to the touch.

Pet stain and odor removal: questions, answered
Can you get old pet urine out of carpet?
Sometimes, and not always completely. Urine that stayed in the pile can usually be treated and rinsed out. Urine that reached the pad or the subfloor may leave a smell that returns in humid weather, and we tell you which case we think it is before starting.
Why does the smell come back on humid days?
Because dried urine leaves salts that draw moisture from the air. When the air is damp they release odor again. If the smell returns after a cleaning, the source is usually deeper than the surface that was cleaned.
Are the cleaning products safe for my pets?
Yes. The cleaning products we use are non toxic and safe for children and pets. Keep animals off the carpet or the furniture while it is damp, so paws do not carry soil onto wet fibers.
Do you treat pet stains on sofas and mattresses?
Yes. Fabric sofas, upholstered chairs and mattresses are treated as well as carpet and rugs. The cover or the surface is cleaned, and an accident that soaked into the foam underneath may improve without going away.
Should I try a store spray first?
Blotting with water is the safer first move. A spray can leave residue that holds soil or sets a ring, and scented ones only cover the smell. If you already used one, tell us what it was so we know what is in the fiber.
How is a pet stain quote worked out?
By the size of the area or the piece, the material and the condition, which here means how many spots there are and how old they are. Quotes are free and carry no obligation, and photographs of the spots are enough to start one online.
