A pen leaking on a couch cushion looks like a disaster and usually is not. The main risk is the removal attempt, not the ink itself.

Blot with alcohol, never rub

Apply isopropyl alcohol to a white cloth and press onto the ink. The ink transfers to the cloth. Rotate to a clean part of the cloth every press so you are not putting ink back.

Work small and slow

Treat the outer edges first and move inward. Large applications flood the fiber and carry ink sideways into clean areas, which is what turns a dot into a smear.

Types that resist

Permanent marker and printer toner are far harder than ballpoint. Toner should be vacuumed dry first, never wetted, because water fuses the plastic particles into the fiber.

Bottom line

Stop after two attempts if the ink is not moving. Professional solvent work has a much better outcome on a spot that has not been over-treated.
