How Often Should You Clean Your Sofa?

People clean carpet on a schedule and treat the sofa as an emergency-only item, even though the sofa gets more direct body contact than any other surface in the house.

The general rule

Once every 12 months for a normally used living room sofa. That is enough to remove body oils before they oxidize and permanently darken the fabric on arms and headrests.

When to go more often

Adjust based on who and what is on the couch.

  • Pets on the furniture, every 6 months
  • Small children, every 6 to 9 months
  • Allergy or asthma in the home, every 6 months
  • Daily use as the main seating, every 9 months
  • Guest room or formal sofa, every 18 to 24 months

Signs it is overdue

Darkened armrests and headrests, a faint smell when you sit down, visible crumbs and grit in the crevices, or fabric that feels slightly tacky. Any of those means the oils have built up.

Maintenance between visits

Vacuum with the upholstery tool weekly, rotate and flip cushions monthly, wash throws and pillow covers, and blot spills right away. Fabric protector after cleaning makes all of this easier.

Bottom line

Put the sofa on the same annual schedule as the carpet and do them in the same visit. Request a combined quote.
