Oil-based stains behave differently from anything water-based. Hitting them with a wet cloth first pushes the oil outward and creates a ring bigger than the original spot.
Absorb first
Cornstarch or baking soda on a fresh grease spot pulls a surprising amount of oil out of the fiber. Leave it 20 minutes, then vacuum. Repeat once if the powder darkens.
Then use the right solvent
Check the fabric tag. S-coded fabric needs a dry solvent spotter. W-coded fabric can take a mild degreasing detergent. Apply to the cloth, not the fabric, and work from the outside of the stain inward.
Old grease
Set-in oil oxidizes and darkens, which makes it look permanent. It often is not, but it usually needs heat, proper solvent, and extraction to fully release.
Bottom line
If the ring is still visible after drying, stop and call us. Additional home attempts usually spread it further.
