Sooner or later, your cat will throw up on the cushion or your dog will track mud onto the loveseat. The first 60 minutes determine whether the stain comes out completely or sets in for good. Here's the process we use professionally, and what you can do yourself before calling for help.
Step 1: Blot, never rub
Rubbing pushes the contamination deeper into the fabric and weakens the fibers. Press a clean white towel onto the spot, lift, and repeat with fresh sections of towel until no more moisture transfers. White towels matter, colored towels can bleed dye into the upholstery.
Step 2: Check the fabric code first
Look under the cushion or on a tag for a letter code: W (water-safe), S (solvent only), WS (either), X (vacuum only). Using water on an S- or X-coded fabric will cause permanent water rings. If you can't find the code, test in a hidden spot first.
Step 3: Use enzyme cleaner, not vinegar
For W- or WS-coded fabrics, an enzyme-based pet cleaner from any pet store breaks down the proteins in urine, vomit, and feces. Vinegar masks the smell temporarily but doesn't break it down, and pets re-mark spots that still smell to them, even if you can't smell it.
Apply a small amount, let it sit for the time printed on the bottle (usually 10–15 minutes), then blot dry.
When DIY isn't enough
Call a professional if any of these apply:
- The stain is more than 24 hours old
- The smell persists after enzyme treatment
- It happened on leather, silk, or velvet
- The cushion soaked through to the foam
- You see yellow rings around the spot (water damage already started)
Why professional cleaning works on old stains
We use hot water extraction with a low-moisture upholstery wand, high temperature, controlled pressure, immediate extraction. That combination lifts contamination that sits beyond the reach of household enzyme cleaners and dries fast enough that the cushion doesn't develop secondary water damage.
Bottom line
Speed matters. The first hour is yours; after that, professional equipment usually wins. If a pet accident set in before you noticed, don't keep scrubbing, call us, and we'll tell you honestly what's recoverable before we start.
