Every 12 to 18 months for a rug in a normal living area with adults and no pets. That keeps abrasive grit from cutting the fibers at the base of the pile, which is what actually wears a rug out.
Adjust for your household
Placement matters as much as the household.
- Entry and hallway rugs, every 6 months
- Living room with kids or pets, every 6 to 9 months
- Dining room rugs, every 9 to 12 months
- Bedroom rugs, every 18 months
- Allergy households, every 4 to 6 months
Signs the rug is overdue
The pile looks flat and dull even after vacuuming, the underside is visibly dirty when you fold a corner, or there is a faint musty smell when the room is closed up. Any of those means it is time.
What you can do between cleanings
Vacuum both sides, rotate the rug twice a year, and deal with spills immediately. Those three habits push the professional cleaning interval out considerably.
