Area rugs hide their dirt well. By the time a rug looks dirty, it is usually overdue by months. Here is a realistic schedule based on what we see in NJ homes.
Synthetic rugs
Polyester, polypropylene, and nylon rugs tolerate frequent cleaning. Plan on every 12 to 18 months for low-traffic rooms, every 6 to 12 months for entries and living rooms.
These rugs respond well to on-site hot water extraction.
Wool rugs
Wool is naturally stain-resistant and holds up to traffic with less visible wear. Clean every 18 to 24 months for light-use rooms, every 12 months for high-traffic areas.
Always use wool-safe chemistry.
Hand-knotted Persians and Orientals
These are usually cleaned every 2 to 4 years if maintained well, more often if pets sleep on them. Spot care and regular vacuuming extend the time between full cleanings.
Bottom line
If you cannot remember the last cleaning, the rug is due. Call for a free assessment and we will recommend a schedule that matches the rug and the room.
